Dong– dong dong qiang~! It’s that time of the year again! Have you gotten ready your kam (mandarin orange)? If not, just make your own! Who said kam must be real? (Please don’t quote me to your elders hehehee…)
For this project, I’ll be using my favourite Papi Yarn and Sirdar Happy Cotton to make my kam. Papi Yarn is a cotton blend yarn, meaning that it’s a mixture of 60% cotton and 40% premium acrylic. It retains the properties of acrylic, which is to make the yarn soft, and the properties of cotton are to help give the amigurumi a structure. We decided on Happy Cotton for the leaves because of the colour! It is a fresh green color, meaning your kam will stay fresh longer!
Kam can be of various colours. It can be pale orange, bright orange, or even burnt orange!
But why Papi Yarn? It’s just because I like the colours! I always tell my friends, the colours looked as though you have spilled milk on them =D=D Furthermore, I want my kam to stay true to its texture for a long time for me to use for many years to come. Papi Yarn is soft and silky. Most importantly, it doesn’t fuzz up easily! You wouldn’t want your hard work to fuzz up after a few days.
And of course, using my trusty Tulip hook to go along with my project! 2.5mm or 3.0mm are suitable for this yarn. Quick dig out your hooks and start now!
This is an easy pattern provided that you have already attended our Tiny Rabbit Hole’s Beginner Workshops or equivalent! If you have not, feel free to visit our Youtube Channel to learn how to crochet a simple round ball.

Instructions
- Our amigurumi are mostly done in continuous rounds starting with a Magic Ring. You don’t need to end with a slip stitch. You should use a stitch marker to mark the last stitch of every round at all times.
- You may wish to download the Counter+ app to help you with your counting.
- Please crochet the stitches tightly to prevent stuffing from showing. However, do not crochet too tightly otherwise it’ll be difficult to continue
- Be sure to push the washer down only the first screw of the eye to prevent bulging.
- Always stuff your amigurumi firmly till the point that it feels bouncy.
- Always leave long tail for sewing.
- When felting, ensure needle is perpendicular to object.

PATTERN
[UPDATE] we have included 2 sizes for the kam!
Kumquat (4.5cm)
R1: sc 6 into magic ring (6sts)
R2: [inc] 6x …………………..(12sts)
R3: [sc 1, inc] 6x……………(18sts)
R4: [sc 2, inc] 6x……………(24sts)
R5: [sc 3, inc] 6x……………(30sts)
R6: [sc 4, inc] 6x……………(36sts)
R7-11: sc 36 (5 rounds)..(36sts)
R12: [sc 4, dec] 6x…………(30sts)
R13: [sc 3, dec] 6x…………(24sts)
R14: [sc 2, dec] 6x…………(18sts)
Attach safety eyes between R9 and 10, 7 sts between eyes. Start stuffing and continue as you go.
R15: [sc 1, dec] 6x…………(12sts)
R16: [dec] 6x………………….(6sts)
Break yarn and pull the yarn tail through the last stitch all the way. Sew remaining stitches closed and weave in all ends.
We have received some feedback that they would like to do a bigger Kam! So what you can do is to increase the largest round to be bigger than it is.
So instead of increasing your largest round to 36 sts, you may continue on a few rounds as written below:
R7: [sc 5, inc] 6x……………(42sts)
R8: [sc 6, inc] 6x……………(48sts)
R9: [sc 7, inc] 6x……………(54sts)
Of course, if you want to have a gigantic kam, you may continue on until you have achieved the size that you’ll like!
And what about the height of the kam? You wouldn’t want to do just 5 rounds as that’ll look more like a Ribena Pastille. This is a rough gauge based on my experience but it’s not 100% accurate. If anyone is doing this bigger version, please let me know how yours look like ok?
I expect about 8 rounds of maintaining rounds to make sure the height is balanced with the width of the kam. However, if you felt that it’s not tall enough, feel free to add a few more rounds!
R10-17: sc 54 (8 rounds)..(54sts)
So after that, you’ll just have to work your way down again.
R18: [sc 7, dec] 6x……………(48sts)
R19: [sc 6, dec] 6x……………(42sts)
R20: [sc 5, dec] 6x……………(36sts)
Then after that, you resume back to the original pattern at R12 to complete it.
I’ll reprint the big kam pattern below here so that it won’t be too confusing
Kam (6.5cm)
R1: sc 6 into magic ring (6sts)
